The Aviba association of travel agencies in the Balearics suggests there are "signs of exhaustion" among tourism markets because of the increases in prices. But it only refers to Germany specifically, and association president, Pedro Fiol, says: "We will continue to grow in terms of the number of tourists this summer because some markets compensate for a deficit in others. However, we must consider whether we will be able to maintain the prices for another season."
While Fiol accepts that demand is growing from visitors who willing to pay higher prices for quality, he points to a parallel, often illegal offer for those who cannot afford to pay prices that increase year after year but who do not want to give up their holidays in the Balearics, even if this means shorter stays.
"We're talking about tourists who come with less money to spend, especially if their countries' economies are contracting, as is the case in Germany."
Summer season bookings, according to Fiol, "are proceeding at a good pace". Germany* continues to be the main market, but he maintains that Germany has been "declining for several months compared to last year".
As to the UK market, Fiol refers to a certain contradiction. "Agencies and the airport agree on an increase in British passengers and business volume, although official statistics indicate otherwise."
* The official figures show that German tourist numbers have risen on average by ten per cent since the start of 2024. The most recent figures were for April, and these indicated that the German trend was continuing.
