The two owners of a one-time gym in Manacor both face fines of 70,000 euros for having turned the gym into 26 substandard dwellings.
These are in a two-floor building of 426 square metres - 13 dwellings on each floor. In addition to these dwellings - just pokey rooms - communal bathrooms and kitchens have been created. There is no planning licence for this conversion, and the dwellings don't meet habitability requirements.
After a town hall inspection on September 23, proceedings were started. As well as a fine, the town hall ordered the immediate suspension of work and cut off the water and the electricity.
The owners have a month to demolish the work that has been carried out. They can submit an appeal to the town hall.
