The Palma bus company, EMT, is budgeting for 40 million euros income in 2025, an increase of 21 million. The reason is that the company and the town hall aren't envisaging there being free bus transport in the city next year.
The circumstances are the same as they were twelve months ago, when it had appeared as if there wouldn't be free buses in 2024. These related to issues regarding the Spanish Government's budget and to funding from Madrid that the town hall considered to be insufficient. It is once more being said that the bus company is out of pocket by some seven million euros.
The town hall initially said that the buses wouldn't be free but then changed its mind. If there is no change of mind this year, the expectation is that passenger numbers will decrease by some 15% in 2025.
Free public transport is available to residents of Mallorca who have the necessary travel cards. There has as yet been no confirmation that other buses (TIB), the trains and the metro will continue to be free next year.
