A Portuguese man was arrested on Wednesday and charged with murder after attacking his Swiss mother-in-law with an axe. Police said that the victim had suffered various mortal blows to the head. The Ses Salinas council declared three days of mourning.

The incident occurred in Colonia Sant Jordi on Wednesday evening. According to police the victim and her alleged attacker had been involved in a heated argument. The man, who allegedly has a long criminal record, was ordered to leave the house. He refused saying that he had "nowhere to go." This is when the attack is alleged to have taken place.

Ses Salines Police and the Guardia Civil went to the scene and found the woman lying in a large pool of blood on the ground.

The Portuguese man, who according to neighbours had a volatile temper, had been living in the house with his estranged partner and her mother.

According to police there were frequent fights. The Guardia's Judicial Police took charge of the case and informed the courts in Manacor which ordered a forensic examination of the body.
