The passengers of a bus and the drivers who were travelling at the time on the road between s’Alquería (Es Turó) and Can Picafort got a fright when the driver of the TIB (Transports de les Illes Balears) bus made a very dangerous overtaking manoeuvre and almost caused an accident, forcing one vehicle partially off the road.
The events, as recorded by a vehicle security camera, took place last Friday at around 13:50 hours.
At one point, the bus came across a tractor in the same lane, which was travelling at low speed and stuck to the right-hand side of the road.
The bus driver decided to overtake it on a straight stretch with a broken white line.
In other words, the manoeuvre is perfectly legal as long as there are no vehicles in front of him.
Just at that moment, when he was carrying out the manoeuvre and had completely moved into the oncoming lane, he ran head-on into a car the driver of which had no choice but to brake hard and pull over to the right-hand hard shoulder to avoid the collision.
In the end, thanks to the car driver’s skill, the collision was avoided.
As the scene was recorded on a safety camera of a vehicle driving a few metres behind, the owner of the images tried to contact the Balearic government (official website of the TIB) to report the incident but the website does not allow documentary evidence of the offences to be submitted.
Eyewitnesses described the action as totally reckless and dangerous.
“This man is not aware that he is driving a large bus full of people. If he had collided head-on with the car we would be talking about a real tragedy”.
The images are now in the possession of the Guardia Civil and Local Police of the municipality in question so that they open an investigation into what happened and sanction, if deemed appropriate, the alleged reckless action of the driver.
