Deficiencies with Albufera treatment plant highlighted again

The Mallorca Blue group, which, among other things, has recently been publicising examples of what it describes as saturation of boats off certain beaches, has now denounced insufficiently treated water that is contaminating the sea in Can Picafort and Playa de Muro as well as the Albufera wetlands.

The cause of this is the treatment plant on the Son Bosc finca by Albufera. Operational since 1989, it has long been maintained that it is obsolete and can't cope with demands placed on it. Santa Margalida town hall remains opposed to a project to replace the plant with a new one that would be in the Son Baulo area. The existing plant is in the neighbouring Muro municipality; Muro town hall is in favour of the new plant.

The group says that the detrimental impact on the sea is not caused by a sewage outlet but by the inadequate treatment of water. The plant, in its view, does not comply with legal requirements for protecting coastal waters and for water quality.
