National Police in Manacor are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a ten-month-old girl who was left in a car for eight hours.
The baby had been in the care of her 56-year-old grandfather. At seven o'clock yesterday morning he left the baby in his car as she was sleeping. He went for a coffee, but it wasn't until around three o'clock in the afternoon that he returned to the car. It would seem that he had forgotten that he had left the child in the car.
He called for help, which came from a doctor who passing by and two staff from a nearby clinic. Efforts to revive the baby proved fruitless. The grandfather was taken to Manacor Hospital, suffering an anxiety attack. Police have yet to interview him but he has been placed under investigation for a possible crime of reckless homicide.
The family is from Son Macia in Manacor. The village's fiestas have been suspended by the town hall.
