The two sides involved in the dispute over working hours and conditions for staff at the 112 emergency centre have reached a deal which will avert industrial action.

Staff at the centre had planned to embark on a wave of industrial action from today, but a deal was reached on Monday evening.

Improvements to working conditions will be made, especially for those operators who have to handle the emergency call centre while the training period for staff will also be reduced.

Staff believe that the new measures will enable the centre, which coordinates all the emergency services in the Balearics, to operate more smoothly and more efficiently, especially at this time of year when the centre is at its busiest.

The director general for public functions, Pedro J Ramirez, said that the new deal is good news for 112 staff and that this should bring an end to the dispute “once and for all”.

The director general for emergencies, Pere Perello, added that the agreement is not only in the best interests of the 112 employees but also the general public at large and all of the emergency services which depend on 112 for coordination and information.
