Yesterday morning, the National Police raided a food distribution company, Cárnicas Luis, which is based at the Son Bugadelles industrial estate in Santa Ponsa. Several people are now under investigation following a search of the premises which revealed a large quantity of food beyond its expiry date and in a poor condition.

This meat company supplies hotels, shops and restaurants across Majorca. It also has its own shops through which food beyond its sell-by date was apparently being sold. Inspection of food products found some to have mould on them. Government health inspectors have initiated proceedings as a result.

For the moment, the police have not formally arrested anyone, but it is expected that they will do once a specialist team has considered the evidence.

The police acted after receiving complaints about poorly conserved food products and also about violations of workers' rights.

Some of the company's vehicles were immobilised during the operation as their documentation was not in order.

This is the second such operation in recent weeks. Cárnicas Vicente, based in Marratxi, is also the subject of an investigation into the distribution of out-of-date meat and other products.
