An eighteen-year-old Majorcan, Joan James R.S., has died after having been knocked down by a van in Chichester, where he was visiting family and friends.
The incident occurred in Chichester at around one o'clock on Tuesday morning. He was walking alone when he was hit by the van. He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he later died.
The circumstances are still being investigated; the Hampshire Constabulary have called for witnesses.
Joan James was from Esporles, where his mother is a teacher at the primary school; his father is British. Residents of the village have been devastated by the news, and Miquel Ensenyat, the president of the Council of Majorca and a former mayor of Esporles, tweeted a message of support to family and friends "at this moment of deep sadness".
