The jury in the trial of 51-year-old José María C.G. yesterday found him guilty of murdering his wife Celia and has agreed that he attempted to impede the investigation and simulated an attempt at suicide.
It was accepted that the accused had gone to Celia's home in Son Cotoner, Palma - they were by November 2016 not living together - with the intention of killing her. He had acted in a premeditated fashion. The jury ruled out his having suffered from a temporary mental disorder that had affected how he had acted.
After hitting Celia with his fists, the accused then struck her with an iron kettle before finally strangling her.
The prosecution service has called for a 25-year sentence plus 80,000 euros compensation for each of Celia's five children. The defence disagreed with the verdict, and the court was told that there will be an appeal.
The sentence will be delivered in the next few days.
