Some eighty people needed to be evacuated from their homes in an area of Palma yesterday morning when there was a blaze from five rubbish containers.
The incident occurred at around quarter past four at the corner of the Francesc Suau and Agustí Buades streets, which are roughly in the Bons Aires district. Six cars also caught alight. The heat caused the glassfront of a shop to shatter, and the fire was a risk to two buildings that needed to be evacuated.
One person needed treatment for smoke inhalation and was taken to Son Espases Hospital. In addition to the Palma fire service, the local police, ambulances and personnel from the Emaya municipal services agency and Gesa all attended the scene.
The National Police have taken charge of the investigation. It is believed that the containers were set on fire deliberately.
