A Romanian man and woman were arrested last week by the National Police following an incident on Wednesday when a knife was used to threaten two tourists.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the tourist couple were returning to their hotel when they approached by the man and woman on the pretext of asking a question. The man then pulled out a double-bladed knife, while the woman stole a mobile phone.
A security guard at a nearby hotel observed what was happening. He ran after the assailants but lost sight of them. Acting on descriptions given, a National Police patrol noticed the pair on Thursday in the calle Marbella, Playa de Palma. When officers approached them, both of them tried to run off but were caught by the officers.
The police suspect that the two are part of one of the gangs which come to resorts with the intention of committing robberies. The man was in fact arrested last year for a similar crime. When they were arrested, they had 2,000 euros on them and couldn't give a good explanation why they had this amount. The police have since established that they were responsible for various recent robberies, one of which was of 200 pounds in 20 pound notes.
