Further to a previous report in the Bulletin about a residents' protest against the spillage of muddy water at the Es Clot beach area of Barcares and Morer Vermell, the government's land ministry has ordered a suspension of building work. The spillage was coming from the development of a plot by the sea.

Alcudia town hall requested the intervention of the land ministry because of fears expressed by residents that the spillage was harming the sea's ecosystem. They are said to have found dead crabs. Technicians from the ministry took samples of water and confirmed that a pump had been spilling the muddy water into the sea after 30 March. That is the day when the swimming season started; it was therefore prohibited to pump this water into the sea.

Tomàs Adrover, Alcudia's environment councillor, says that the analysis made on Friday established that the water was clean but that the pumping should nevertheless have stopped. If it continues, he stresses, a complaint will be lodged with the Guardia Civil's Seprona division, which has responsibility for environmental offences.

There was an inspection of the work in January. A high level of particles was discovered, and the ministry ordered that appropriate measures needed to be adopted in order to correct this.
