Since the first of the new Aerotib bus services were introduced on 3 May, the service has carried nearly 180,000 passengers. The transport ministry wants to see this number increase by 40 per cent next year.
The airport to resorts service was fully operational until the end of October, but during the winter season four routes will not run because of the lack of demand.
However, the director-general for transport, Jaume Mateu, says that a full service will be operating for twelve months next year. The summer service will start at Easter and there will be a new route from the airport to Cala Ratjada.
The Aerotib programme is being heavily promoted to overseas markets. It was officially launched at the World Travel Market earlier this month and will be rolled out at Fitur in Madrid in January and the ITB in Berlin in March.
Mateu explains that the government wants overseas tourists to know that it is expanding the network of public transport linking the airport with most of the key destinations across the island and that there are alternatives to hiring vehicles or even catching taxis.
The response from holidaymakers has been positive; hence there are plans to expand the service.
