Terraferida, which has regularly released information about Airbnb accommodation in the Balearics, says that the holiday rentals legislation had a dramatic immediate impact on the number of properties and therefore accommodation places being advertised. Within three days of the legislation coming into force, there was a decrease of 22% - more than 36,000 places from a total of over 160,000 that had been on offer in August.
In Majorca, the percentage was greater than in the other islands - 24.5%. Palma and Calvia were the municipalities where there were the greatest losses, though Terraferida also specifically draws attention to Manacor and Santanyi.
The organisation adds that by this summer the number of accommodation places in Majorca that were being advertised on Airbnb had risen to just over 109,000. There were some 37,000 in Ibiza and Formentera and more than 15,000 in Minorca.
