A 71-year-old woman was knocked down by a dustcart and dragged some fifteen metres yesterday morning. This occurred when she was crossing the calle Joan Alcover in Palma just before quarter to nine. She had walked out from between two parked cars, and it would seem that the driver didn't see her and she was unaware of the truck.
Police, National and Palma, firefighters from Palma and an ambulance from the Rotger Clinic all went to the scene. The driver, it was ascertained, had initially been unaware that the truck was pulling the woman along. Releasing her from under the vehicle was a delicate operation in order to prevent causing more injury. She had sustained severe injuries, especially to her legs.
The woman was taken to Son Espases, where her condition is serious. Police had to clear a way through rush-hour traffic to allow the ambulance to get to the hospital as quickly as possible.
The Emaya municipal services agency and the town hall issued a statement deeply regretting the accident and hoping that the woman makes a recovery. The driver, who was tested and found negative for either drink or drugs, was greatly affected by what had happened.
