On Tuesday evening the National Police used rubber bullets to disperse a crowd in Son Banya that was throwing stones at officers who had gone to the shanty town to make an arrest.
A 28-year-old man with a history of convictions was wanted on suspicion of having used robbery with violence against two taxi drivers. The first robbery was overnight on Saturday at a petrol station near Son Banya. The second, when a knife was used to stab the taxi driver in the arm, was at the entrance to Son Banya on Monday morning.
The officers arrived at half two on Tuesday afternoon and searched for the man, who was found to be barricaded in one of the houses. Finally, at around seven o'clock, they were able to capture him. It was at this point that a crowd gathered and started to throw stones at the officers and their vehicles. Several stones were targeted at one particular officer.
The police returned yesterday and arrested a 20-year-old. He was due to appear in court later, charged with attempted murder. The 28-year-old was also scheduled for a court appearance.
