The former US ambassador to Spain, James Costos, told the Bulletin recently that he was going to invite the Obamas to Majorca and it appears that he has.
A special security operation was mounted yesterday when Michelle Obama landed at Palma airport just after 6am. She spent the day at the Ses Planes finca in Esporles, the property of Marieta Salas, which James Costos has rented for the summer. She later went to Banyalbufar.
She is understood to be spending the best part of a week on the island and this is not the first time the former first lady has visited Majorca. She spent a few hours on the island at the Marivent Palace during the summer of 2010 while she and her daughter Sasha were on holiday in Spain. They enjoyed a light supper with King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Princess Elena and the present Queen Letizia.
Queen Sofia gave Michelle and Sasha Obama traditional Balearic necklaces while the King gave her some special Majorcan seeds for her to plant in her White House garden.
Michelle Obama and her daughters have visited Spain on a number of occasions and they love the country, as does the former president, who unfortunately had to cut a three-day official visit short after just a day because of a terror incident back in the United States.
Costos, who has been coming to Majorca for the past 12 years, loves the island and admits he would not be seen anywhere else, said he was determined to get the Obamas, to whom he is extremely close, over to Majorca.
