The four Aerotib airport to resorts bus services which started in May and June have combined revenue targets of just under 2.27 million euros (up to the end of October). The highest is for the Palma-Calvia route (683,000 euros) and the lowest is for the Cala Millor service (442,000).
The regional transport ministry has told one of the taxi drivers' associations that in the concessions for these services there is provision in case the bus companies don't reach the forecasted levels. In other words, the government will compensate them, these companies being Transabus (the Calvia and Cala d'Or services), Arriva to Alcudia and Aumasa for the Cala Millor service.
The taxi drivers' association is the one within the Balearic transport federation. Its president is Antoni Bauzá and it was the association most opposed to the bus services. It would seem that in March the association asked to see transport ministry documentation regarding the terms of the concessions. It is understood that the directorate for transparency intervened, and so only now is it known that there is provision for compensation.
The association says that any compensation will contradict what the minister, Marc Pons, and the director general for transport, Jaume Mateu, stated on various occasions: that the companies were assuming all the risk and costs for the new routes. It also complains that the contracts for the services were awarded without there having been public tenders.
