Limits to be placed on cars going to the Formentor lighthouse

The regional government, Council of Majorca and Pollensa town hall are discussing the restriction of private vehicles going to the lighthouse in Formentor. Mayor Miquel Àngel March says that there wouldn't be a total prohibition as there would be exceptions, such as to permit people with reduced mobility.

Different options are being considered, drawing on experiences on the mainland, where there are cases of, for instance, vehicles having to have a minimum number of occupants in order to be permitted. The mayor adds that there are many issues that need considering. One relates to parking and to a possible limit on the number of spaces. He stresses that whatever is ultimately agreed, there is a clear will on behalf of the government, Council and town hall to protect natural areas by limiting vehicle access and promoting public transport use instead.

With this in mind, an option being given close attention is a shuttle bus that would run from the new bus stop in Puerto Pollensa (which is due to be by the Formentor bypass). Such a service, and indeed restrictions on private vehicles, will not come into effect until next year's tourism season.

In addition to measures for the lighthouse, the town hall is also talking with the government and the Council about limiting parking for Formentor beach and for the Colomer mirador. The Council, which is responsible for the road to Colomer, is said to be particularly concerned with the current situation.
