The Council of Majorca's hunting department has authorised the cull of some goats in the Boquer part of Puerto Pollensa. The department's director, Joan Manera, says that there are safety issues because of the number of goats which cross the bypass and enter the built-up areas. The goats have been doing this because the lack of rain has meant there is less for them to eat. They have therefore been going in search of other sources of food.
Initially, the goats were invading residential areas nearest to Boquer, but they have been going progressively further; right into the church square in fact.
A few months ago there was a social media campaign to stop a potential cull. This was in the end suspended.
Puerto Pollensa is not the only part of the island that goats have been entering. Nearby Cala San Vicente is another area, while residents in Sant Elm and Cala Llamp in Andratx have been complaining for a year or more about the increasing number.
