Francesc Miralles, the first vice-president for culture and heritage at the Council of Majorca, has presented an exhibition to honour the first flight between the mainland and Majorca on 2 July, 1916.

Miralles said that the exhibition recovers the history of the pilot, Salvador Hedilla, who made possible the historical milestone during a two-hour flight from Barcelona. "Connecting Majorca with the peninsula by plane for the first time was a momentous occasion that facilitated the progress of many aspects of our lives, both socially and economically."

The exhibition in the gardens at La Misericordia Cultural Centre in Palma celebrates that journey and the life of Hedilla, who landed at 07.19 "in a quiet field in Son Banya". It will be a travelling exhibition that sets out this weekend by visiting Sa Pobla. It will then go to Algaida, Son Sant Joan and Barcelona-El Prat airports, Manacor, Marratxi, Selva, Inca and other Majorcan municipalities.
