The regional government's "plan for touristic equilibrium" will adopt measures which influence the flow of tourists, mitigate the effects tourism "massification" and improve the management of natural resources.
This plan, tourism minister Biel Barceló has told parliament, will ease tourist pressure in the summer and promote more holiday activity in the spring and autumn. He added that the tourism ministry will coordinate a programme of actions in pursuit of the plan's objectives with other ministries and public authorities.
Barceló also explained the budget for 2016. There will be 7% more for the whole ministry, which also includes innovation and research, and will amount to 63 million euros. Of this budget, 13.6 million will be devoted to innovation and research. The minister said that this will seek to promote policies of innovation with the aims of economic diversification and the transition to a new economic model.
He announced the creation of the Balearic Islands Research Institute, which will centralise innovation management and become a tool for retaining and attracting talent. There will also be an increase in financial assistance to innovating companies so that they can pursue specific projects.
The tourism directorate will have 32.4 million euros at its disposal. As already reported, 19.5 million of these will go to the Balearic Tourism Agency. There will be three million for the European funds directorate.
The technological development department will have a budget of 7.8 million, which doesn't include eleven million for common technological services.
