With the Halloween celebrations over for another year, tens of thousands of people today headed to cemeteries across the Balearics to honour the dead and mark All Saints’ Day.
In Palma, a special police operation was put into action to make sure that the day passed off smoothly and that traffic flowed easily in the key areas around the cemeteries. Other local councils took similar action as the fine weather drew thousands more than usual out, although many tend to visit the cemeteries and pay their respects the day before to avoid the crowd.
Also in Palma, Mayor José Hila and other senior councillors attended a special religious ceremony at the cemetery.
In Catholic theology, the day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven. It is a national holiday in many historically Catholic countries.
In Methodist theology, All Saints' Day revolves around "giving God solemn thanks for the lives and deaths of his saints".
