The airports authority Aena is to invest at least 100 million euros in improvements to Palma's Son Sant Joan airport. The investment will go towards airline and passenger facilities and services as well as towards resurfacing and changes to runways and the aircraft parking area for inter-island flights.

A further aspect of the investment will be the creation of a free parking area at arrivals. This will have barriers and a maximum stay of fifteen minutes. It will be sited next to where buses stop and have some eighty places. It is due to be operational by either May or June next year. There are also to be new areas for families with children and recharging points for electronic devices.

Palma is the most profitable airport in the Aena network. It generated a net profit of 120 million euros last year, and the forecast is for this to be exceeded this year. Passenger traffic records are again being beaten in 2016. By the end of the year, it is expected that 26 million passengers will have passed through the airport.
