At 3pm this afternoon the skies opened over Palma, and as forecast, the storm which had been moving across the Balearics, broke swamping the capital and causing traffic chaos. There were also reports of localised flooding and shoppers and tourists were forced to quickly dive for cover. The island remains on level one storm alert.
However, as was the case on Tuesday, when it rained mostly in the south of the island, other areas have today been more or less unaffected. In parts of the north there was some light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, but no more.
The heaviest of the rain and the storm struck central areas such as Montuiri and Binissalem. The rainfall was heaviest in the latter - 47.8 litres per square metre. Santa Maria registered slightly less. In the area of the port in Palma there were 27.6 litres, but the uneven distribution of the rain was reflected by the fact that only 7.4 litres fell at the university, while Bunyola received only 5.7 litres. In the Son Moix area of Palma there was flooding.
The storm produced problems on the roads with tailbacks on the Via Cintura in Palma and on the Inca motorway at different points.
