Evelio Antich, the secretary general of the national government's delegation in the Balearics, led politicians, Palma town hall representatives and members of Palma local police in a midday minute’s silence to remember the life and service of officer Biel Llull, who was knocked down and killed by a French woman driver while cycling with his son near Sineu on Wednesday evening.

She is now on remand in Palma prison. She was driving with four times the permitted amount of alcohol in her body.

Tributes were paid in Palma and in his home town of Sineu.

The minute's silence was held at the Sant Ferran station where Biel Llull had been based. Antich told the local police that it has all of the support of the government delegation as does the family of the victim - 44-year-old Biel Llull’s wife was pregnant with their second child.

The secretary general also called on the general public to show the "maximum respect" to the thousands of cyclists who use the island’s roads every day. Among them are the some 150,000 cycling tourists who come to the island each year.

Six cyclists have lost their lives so far this year. As far as the national government delegation is concerned, that is six too many.
