The Majorca Restaurants Association has expressed its outrage at the closure of the Paseo Marítimo in Palma on Sunday morning because of a sporting event - the Santander Triathlon. The decision by the town hall is, according to association president Alfonso Robledo, "very serious". He adds: "We are in peak season and this decision has been taken with consulting us and with very little prior warning."
The road will be closed from 08.30 to 13.30 between the Porto Pi centre and the Gesa building.
Robledo stresses that the association's indignation is not directed at the promoters of event but at the time of year that has been chosen and at the lack of foresight. "We are in favour of events being organised in the city, but they must be in the low season with the aim of giving the city a boost and tackling seasonality. Closing the road for five hours on a Sunday morning will result in a great loss of revenue for businesses and in inconvenience for their customers."
He added that there is an unwritten agreement to only stage events out of season, something which the Palma 365 Foundation accepted.
