Regional transport minister Marc Pons has been to Campos to see for himself how the minibus shuttle service between Sa Rapita and Es Trenc beach has been working. Since the service was introduced on 4 July, there has been an average of 380 passengers per day, with the highest number having been 727 on 13 August. Given its popularity, the service will continue to operate until 11 September.
The numbers using the service rose in August. In July there was a total of 9,981, while in August it was 12,311. Pons considers these to be positive results and says that the government is looking at ways of alleviating traffic pressure in areas such as Es Trenc and Ses Covetes. Therefore, it is wishing to change the model of transport in environmentally sensitive places. The success of the Es Trenc service is to feed into a plan for sustainable transport.
There has previously been a government suggestion that minibus park and ride services could be established for certain other beaches, e.g. Sa Calobra, Es Comú (Playa de Muro) and Cala Varques in Manacor. Mayors from the respective municipalities have all said that they are happy to study such services but have asked to be consulted, which they hadn't been when the suggestion was first made.
