The accident which led to the deaths of four members of a German family on Monday was the worst in Majorca since 1997, when four teenagers were killed on the Via Cintura in Palma.
It is believed that the driver of the family's car suddenly sought to turn left into the entrance to Rancho Grande in Son Serra de Marina and went straight into the path of the oncoming van.
There have now been 37 deaths because of road accidents in Majorca so far this year - twelve more than over the same period in 2015. The second most serious accident, when three people lost their lives, was on 16 April. A BMW convertible, travelling at a speed that has been put at around 170kph, hit and killed a motorcyclist on the motorway near the exit for Portals Nous. Two occupants of the car were also killed. The driver, a 21-year-old Bulgarian woman, was admitted to hospital with serious injuries but recovered and was ordered into prison. She had tested positive for four different types of drug.
Two weeks after this accident, two Swiss cyclists were struck by a car driven by a 51-year-old woman and pushed against a wall on the Sineu main road.
Very near to the scene of Monday's accident, two people on a motorbike were killed on 10 January when they were hit by a car at the junction of the Arta-Alcudia main road and the road leading into the urbanisation of Son Serra de Marina.
There have been several other accidents involving a single fatality, such as that of the British woman, Hilary Jennings, who was knocked down and killed on the Alcudia-Puerto Pollensa coast road last week.
