As part of the major operation against drugs gangs in Majorca that was staged on Friday, the Guardia Civil's criminal police found a hideout in the basement of a building in the Coll d'en Rabassa area of Palma that was used as a form of torture chamber.
The Guardia's investigations had included statements from a protected witness who said that there was such a hideout, to which those who failed to meet their debts to one of the gangs were taken in order to "make them see reason". He had explained that it was in the basement of the Coll d'en Rabassa property in the calle Cardenal Rosell, was dark and contained one chair, on which victims would have to sit. When officers broke into it on Friday, it was exactly as the witness had described.
The operation has broken up the two most important cocaine trafficking clans in Majorca - La Eva and Benabad. The leaders of this latter organisation, the brothers Marcos and José Manuel, have both been arrested. They were living the high life, with luxury cars and million-dollar estates.
At Marcos's house, officers found a 110-inch TV that was more like a cinema screen; there was also a white Porsche in the garage. His brother's property in S'Aranjassa between Palma and Llucmajor is valued at some three million euros. Among other things, it contains four jacuzzis and security cameras to cover all parts of the villa.
