Yet another issue has arisen in Puerto Pollensa. It is now the turn of Bar Katy, the one-time famed establishment on the resort's pine walk that closed following the death of its owner, Catalina Marí Adrover, in 2008. The bar was formally ceded to the town hall in 2014, but since then it has been neglected.
Tots per Pollença, the main opposition party that is led by former mayor Tomeu Cifre, have denounced the poor state that the bar is now in and have called on the town hall to rectify the "bad image" that it gives and to set in motion a process of genuine public participation to determine its future and so comply with the wishes of its deceased owner.
When Cifre was mayor, he signed a notarised agreement by which the town hall would inherit the property that is valued at just over half a million euros and occupies a space of 138 square metres with a further eighteen square metres of terrace.
The will established that the bar should be a foundation for the people of Pollensa, and while there was talk at the time of the agreement being signed as to possible uses for the bar, Cifre argues that the current administration has done "absolutely nothing" about it. He is comparing the situation with the bar to those of the former fish market and Capitol cinema in Pollensa town, claiming that the town hall is doing nothing about either of these as well.
Miquel Ángel March, the mayor, has responded by saying that the bar will be a multi-purpose facility and that after the summer there will be work on getting it in order for the new use that it will have. He added that the bar has been subject to a process of public participation and consensus among political parties.
