The regional minister of employment, Iago Negueruela, is to meet operators of handling services at Palma's Son Sant Joan airport in order to hear what they have to say about baggage handlers' working conditions.

This follows meetings on Friday with the general secretaries of the CCOO and UGT unions in the Balearics, and on Thursday with Aena, the airports agency. Negueruela has since expressed concern about the situation with handling services employees. The minister has called on Aena to adapt its contractual bases for handling operators, as there are no "social clauses" in the specifications for tendering.

Aena says that the clauses in contracts are perfectly legal, but Negueruela believes that they result in a competition to decrease the quality of working conditions. He has proposed to Aena that there be a meeting between it, the employment ministry and the handling operators. Aena, however, doesn't believe that this would be appropriate.

Because of this, the minister is going to speak directly with the operators in order to assess their position before adopting any particular measures.
