The Guardia Civil's criminal police has detained 58-year-old Ioan C. following the murder of his 47-year-old Romanian wife, Lucia P. in Puerto Pollensa yesterday morning.
The incident took place shortly before 11am at calle Virgen del Carmen number 86. Local residents were witnesses to what happened, the man stabbing his wife on the balcony of their second-floor apartment. Their 20-year-old son, who had been woken by his mothers' cries for help, sought to intervene and got into a fight with his father.
Witnesses heard the woman crying out for help and shouting that he is killing me. Covered in blood the man then sat in front of the building and waited to be arrested, telling a resident that he had killed his wife because she was a bitch.
The couple had moved to the apartment in February, and residents say there had been no episodes of any violence or argument. It is understood, though, that the woman was filing for divorce. The national government's delegation to the Balearics, which oversees security matters on the islands, says that there was no record of any previous violence by Ioan C.
Pollensa town hall was swift in issuing a statement condemning what happened and to what was a further example of death as a result of gender violence in Majorca (there have been three previous cases this year). A minute's silence was held before yesterday evening's dance of the eagles and Sant Joan Pelós in Pollensa town and there is to be a rally this afternoon.
