Majorca, we are being told, is registering the best May ever in terms of tourist numbers and tourist spending, and this is especially so in three of the principal resort areas: those of the hoteliers for Playa de Palma, Palmanova-Magalluf and Alcudia-Can Picafort.

Occupancy levels, according to the Majorca Hoteliers Federation, are on average 85%, which is between ten and fifteen per cent higher than last year. The presidents of the hoteliers associations for these three areas confirm this. May is going "very well" thanks to occupancy levels and spending, which is also benefiting shops and restaurants.

Jaime Horrach of the Alcudia-Can Picafort association says that there are more people, more occupancy and more spending. "In our area the average occupancy is around 90%, more than ten points up from 2015."

Francisco Marin in Playa de Palma adds that the past weekend saw hotels full, thanks in part to German celebrations of Father's Day. This led to an increase in airport arrivals and benefited the whole of the Playa de Palma area. "The average occupancy for the month will be over 85%, which is five per cent more than 2015." Meanwhile, hotels in the city itself have recorded historic levels of occupancy for the first ten days of May.

In Palmanova-Magalluf, Sebastian Darder says that average occupancy for the whole of the month will be 70%, an increase of almost 4% over last year. He notes that bookings from the German and Scandinavian markets are high and observes that tour operators have been running offers which have boosted numbers. "And tourists are spending more than other in other seasons, which is more than positive."
