Russia were proclaimed overall champions of the Mallorca Football Tournaments 2016 on Sunday evening. The team was presented with the much coveted trophy by the mayor of Calvia, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, who was accompanied by the councillor for tourism and mommerce, Antonio Garcia Moles, and other senior councillors not to mention the president of Mallorca Football Tournaments, Harry Engels, and the chairman of the World Police Indoor Soccer Tournament, Hans Emde.
As the day developed and the finals got closer, the crowds grew in size and the atmosphere reached fever pitch. Russia won the men’s tournament, France took the women’s title, Moldova won the over-35s tournament and the over-45s champions were from Sofia, Bulgaria.
Most of the competitors were either police, military or government personnel from all over the world. The tournament here in Majorca, which enters its sixth year in 2017, continues to grow in popularity with over 2,000 players taking part in the main tournament and the two amateur competitions, the second of which kicks off this Thursday. This has all been organised in association with Viajes Adramar with the full support of Calvia Council, the Balearic ministry for tourism, the Santa Ponsa Hoteliers Association and media support and shirt sponsorship from the Majorca Daily Bulletin.
With 2,000 people in the resort for anything from four days to two weeks, and coming at the beginning of May, the local tourist industry welcomes the event with open arms because of the early income it generates. It literally helps kick off the season.
