A 23-year-old Colombian man has been arrested by the Guardia Civil, suspected of having murdered his girlfriend in Son Servera. He has been named as Carlos Villegas. The victim has been named as Victoria Sard, an eighteen-year-old Majorcan.
The arrest was made after the man went to the Guardia station in Arta accompanied by a lawyer and told officers that he thought he had killed his partner. Officers then went to the scene at Calle Madre Virgen de Lourdes, number 12 in the centre of the town.
The Guardia's judicial police unit has taken charge of the investigation, and the scene of the apparent crime has been sealed off. Initial reports suggest that Victoria was strangled and that the suspected murderer has been prone to gender violence in the past.
A minute's silence was held to show consternation at what is the second death of a woman in Majorca this year in similar circumstances. Numerous politicians and others gathered in front of the national delegation to the Balearics building in Palma. They included members of the regional government, opposition party representatives, the president of the Council of Majorca and the mayor of Palma.
