Majorca golf travel fair threatened in major dispute over funding

The regional government says that it is seeking a solution that will allow the International Golf Travel Market in Majorca to go ahead. This fair, a highly important one for the world of golf and the suppliers of golf tourism, is scheduled to take place between 14 and 17 November this year. But the government suggests that it faces being let down by the national tourism institute and agency, Turespaña, which had promised a grant of 300,000 euros. The fair is in danger of not happening because of what is described as a "slowing down" in the processing of this grant by Turespaña.

The fair, which has taken place in different regions of Spain in the past, has always been able to draw on this level of grant, say government sources. An implication being drawn is that the Balearics are not receiving the same treatment from national government that other regions have enjoyed. The regional tourism ministry is, therefore, looking for contingencies in order to ensure that the fair doesn't have to be called off.

The director-general for tourism, Pilar Carbonell, has already met with all the main bodies involved in staging the fair and has sought financial backing if necessary. "We are very keen to find a solution," she says. "The regional government cannot bear the cost of the whole event."
