Park and ride solution for Es Trenc car parking

J. M. Gimenez

| Campos |

Last summer, car parking by beachgoers heading to Es Trenc created a major headache in Ses Covetes and Colonia Sant Jordi. This was the result, in no small part, of the closure of a car park, the legality of which had always been in question. A consequence, so it was reported last season, was that some businesses were suffering through the loss of trade because of the difficulties with parking.

The regional government's environment ministry is, therefore, holding talks with the Council of Majorca's land department and is working with the town hall in Campos to try and arrive at a solution for the problems with access to Ses Covetes and Es Trenc beach. The discussions have been ongoing since the end of last year, and it is hoped that the solution can be in place before the start of the summer season. This will entail a law that permits the regulation of car parks in the coastal area in Campos.

Both Ses Covetes and Es Trenc are classified as areas of special natural interest and so new parking areas will have to be outside the boundaries of these areas. Consequently, the three public institutions are working on what would be a form of park and ride scheme that uses small buses or similar vehicles.

The bureaucratic division is such that the ministry is dealing with legal requirements for creating car parks, while the department at the Council of Majorca is addressing regulation related to access via the carreteras (main roads) to these new car parking areas. These are expected to be sited close to the roads from Campos to Sa Rapita and to Colonia Sant Jordi.
