Bad weather rains on Real Mallorca 100 years parade

Real Mallorca were meant to have been playing away today, so the fact that the match was called off was not as much of a blow to the start of the club's centenary celebrations as would have been the case if the match had been at home. Snow and heavy rain in Huesca in Aragon led to the Liga Segunda game being postponed.

In Palma, meanwhile, the town hall had marked the one hundredth anniversary by hanging the club's flag from the balcony of the town hall building. In attendance were the mayor, José Hila, and other town hall representatives as well as members of the club's board.

The mayor said: "This is a very important day for the city of Palma as it marks the start of the celebration of Real Mallorca's centenary." Noting that this was a start of celebrations "for the fans", he thanked the club's president, Utz Claassen, and the president of the centenary committee, Toni Tugores. "We will be there with Mallorca and the fans during this week of celebration," added Hila.

Until 5 March, there is to be a grand week of events to mark the centenary. 27 February (today) corresponds with the day when the founders drew up the agreement to form the club, while 5 March is the date traditionally acknowledged as having been when it was founded.

In Majorca, the weather has not been quite as bad as in Aragon, but it has been a day, nevertheless, of rain and wind, with snow falling down to 700 metres and the coasts taking something of a battering. A storm overnight affected different parts of the island.
