Some thirty protesters - businesspeople and residents - staged a protest in Puerto Pollensa this morning against the work on the semi-pedestrianisation of the coastal road.
The protest, called by Tolo Llompart of Tolo's Restaurant, made clear the discontent with the delays to the work, and there were demands that it be done in stages - as the local hoteliers have been asking for - which would allow for work to end in April and re-start in November. (The contractor has turned down this request, and the work will carry on into May, with the contractor saying that it can be completed by the first week of that month.)
According to the protesters, there has been poor planning which has "turned Puerto Pollensa upside down" and left it without street lighting. They called for improved safety, lighting and access; these having been disrupted by the work.
Tolo Llompart referred to what he claimed had been three months during which time work had virtually stopped and when there were only three people working. He also suggested that subcontracting of work had led to a lack of co-ordination of the work.
