High winds batter Majorca

| Palma |

Most of the Balearics was hit today by strong winds, with gusts of up to eighty kilometres per hour affecting parts of Majorca, Ibiza and Formentera. In addition to the yellow alert issued by the Aemet met agency for winds, there was one for severe coastal conditions, with all four islands experiencing winds of up to Force 7 (near gales) and waves of three metres.

Across the rest of the country, high winds were also a factor in the mountains of the northwest, with alerts out in thirty provinces for wind and rough seas. Particularly affected were the coasts of Galicia, where the alert was raised to amber as winds hit 100kph. Less badly affected but on yellow warning were parts of Catalonia, such as Barcelona, where there was, like with the Balearics, a further alert for coastal conditions. The rough seas were also affecting the south of the mainland in the Costa Almeria and Costa del Sol. The rain of which Majorca has seen hardly any for several weeks (save for some areas of the island on the evening of the Three Kings) was intense yesterday on the Atlantic coast as well as in the Pyrenees, Asturias and the north of Extremadura. In parts of Galicia, the alert for rain had to be raised to amber.

The wind is expected to be quite strong in most parts of Majorca tomorrow, but coastal conditions should ease.
