Meliá Hotels International is to invest more than three millions euros in turning its emblematic Meliá de Mar hotel in Illetes into a luxury establishment under its premium brand, Gran Meliá. The upgraded hotel will be ready for next season.

The Majorcan hotel chain, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2016, is continuing on a strategy of enhancing its position in the luxury hotel segment. Recently, it announced that it will be investing 19 million euros in the historic Tryp Ambassador in the centre of Madrid and renaming it the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques.

“An emblematic hotel such as the Gran Meliá de Mar will help to strengthen the recognition of our brand and differentiate the resort in the high and premium segment in an increasingly competitive environment,” says Meliá CEO and vice-president, Gabriel Escarrer.

Meliá will reopen the doors of the 144-room hotel after completing a series of renovations to improve the quality of accommodation and the pool and terrace areas. This overhaul will give the hotel the standards of services associated with the Gran Meliá brand, while it will also benefit from new technology equipment and a renewal of the current spa: to be known in future as Spa by Clarins, courtesy of a partnering agreement with the cosmetics firm. In terms of cuisine, there will still be two restaurants as well as a cocktail lounge. Meeting rooms and events halls will also be improved.

The hotel is one of the most charismatic in Majorca. Designed by the renowned architect José Antonio Coderch, it was totally renewed in 2008 while still being considered to be one of the finest examples of modern architecture in the Balearics.
In 2009, the hotel was made adults-only.
