Felanitx dog pound closed because of its deplorable state

The town hall in Felanitx has decided to close the municipal dog pound on account of the “deplorable state of abandonment in which we now find this municipal facility and the zero control of its activity on behalf of the last two Partido Popular administrations,” says current mayor, Joan Xamena.

Opened in May 2003, Xamena and the councillor for the town’s infrastructures, Joan Aznar, added that “no one in the town hall knew anything about the kennels nor about who was managing them. On the gate there was a sign with some telephone numbers that were for some foreign girls who belong to an animals association, FAAM. We got in touch with them, and they explained that in 2005 the town hall had signed an agreement with the association which for the first few years worked well, but since then they have been doing everything voluntarily and out of their own pockets.”

The closure will be temporary while the town hall looks to get it into proper condition and to legalise it, as it doesn’t conform with current legislation. For now, the association will take care of the 32 dogs and look after them elsewhere.
