Alcudia town hall wants a more detailed study into the economic impact of the Ironman events that are staged twice a year. Yesterday's triathlon involved the participation of 2,500 athletes from 57 countries, and they are said to be accompanied by an average of 2.3 people and to stay for an average of ten days in hotels on the bay of Alcudia and in Pollensa, generally in four-star accommodation.
It is estimated that the average spend of these visitors amounts to some 1,000 euros, a figure which doesn't include the cost of accommodation or travel, so bringing a significant benefit to the non-hotel complementary offer: shops and restaurants, for example. On the basis of this estimate, the economic impact is placed at 8.25 million euros, but the town hall is looking for greater accuracy in assessing the benefit and in knowing, for instance, exactly where athletes, their families, friends and trainers (to which can also be added those involved with the organising of the event) are staying.
