The Balearic Islands led the way in July in being the region of Spain with the greatest increase in turnover in the service sector.
This was up by 8.5% and was ahead of La Rioja with 8%, Cantabria (7.3%) and Catalonia (7.2%). By contrast, among the regions which experienced lowest levels of growth were the Canaries, where turnover rose by just 2.3%. Overall growth across Spain was 6% (by comparison with July 2014).
This was in fact 1.6 points lower than in June, while employment in the sector - up by 2% - was nevertheless only a tenth of the increase registered in June. When adjusted for seasonal effects, the July increase is put at 5.7%. The figures for the service sector are based on commerce - which showed a 6.1% increase - and other areas of business activity.
