Following the hiatus for the summer season, the controversial importing of solid waste into Majorca has restarted, the first ship havign arrived from Belfast at Alcudia's port yesterday, bringing waste from the town of Portadown for incineration at the Son Reus waste-treatment plant.
Opposed by the new administration at Alcudia town hall, the shipments are due to come to an end when the contract expires at the end of the year, though the Council of Majorca, also under a new regime, has been looking to see if it can revoke the contract and so prevent imports more immediately.
The previous administration at the council justified the imports as a way of ensuring that tariffs for waste treatment, levied by the monopoly consortium Tirme, which operates Son Reus and is responsible for Majorca's waste treatment and recycling, would be frozen.
