The Balearic government is working with the island councils and town halls in preparing to receive refugees, while waiting for the European Union to establish a protocol for criteria.
Government spokesperson, Marc Pons, says that this preparatory work will allow a plan for admitting refugees to come into operation the moment that the protocol is announced. The plan involves the co-ordinating of offers from local authorities and from private individuals.
The refugees’ subject was raised by President Armengol when she met Mariano Rajoy earlier this week. Armengol told Rajoy that the Balearics were willing to receive refugees and to help people suffering the “drama” they are. Pons notes that it is difficult to firm up arrangements until the EU has set out the criteria, while regions of Spain, such as the Balearics, are also waiting on calls to be made by Madrid as to what numbers might be admitted.
