The fishermen of Palma, whose association (“cofradía”) comprises some one hundred members, say that the space currently allocated for drying nets should be “irremovable”, as it is vital to their activity and to the tourism image of Palma: in order to give a proper maritime feel to the fishing area.
The head of the association, Rafael Mas, says that negotiations with the new president of the Balearic Ports Authority, Joan Gual, have been positive as he is not prone to making changes.
The new plan for the port allows, the association understands, for sufficient space for the fishermen, but it is looking to have a point of sale for fresh fish in the port. "All ports have them. The sale would be in the afternoon and the quantities determined by law: 50 euros per person per day and no more than 30% of the total catch. The sale of fresh fish would help, he believes. "The first ones who have to live from fishing are the fishermen. We want to sell fish."
